Today especially, with the Black Notebooks controversy in full swing, Kondylis’s article, despite-we repeat-its polemical character, retains a philosophical distance and refuses to absolutize the issue of Heidegger’s aforementioned political involvement (irrespective of whether it affected the core of his philosophical theory), while focusing on some of Heidegger’s purely philosophical weaknesses. Translator’s Note: Panajotis Kondylis’ thought-provoking piece on Heidegger’s Being and Time, though small and overtly polemical, constitutes a sober philosophical criticism far removed from past or present “reductionisms” (consider, for example, Farias’s militant stance) and associations-whether justified or not-between Heidegger’s philosophical program and his membership in the National Socialist Party.
